Conference season
About 2/3 of IUPAC-sponsored conferences and symposia take place during
the months of July and August; this means that you might be about ready
to go deliver a lecture, present a poster, or simply participate in
informal discussions at one of these summer events; all these are
valuable experiences - not only for you, but also for the community of
scientists with whom you closely interact or relate to.
If these events are IUPAC-sponsored, we would very much like to hear
from you when you return; tell us about IUPAC's presence. What do you
think could have been done to improve IUPAC's presence. If you are an
IUPAC member, on the way to discuss your project, what worked well, what
did you miss.
All your ideas/suggestions/comments are valuable and could serve to
improve IUPAC's relations with the community at large, but also could
help others to prepare.
Write to us, send us your comments - we want to hear from you!

* Report of IUPAC Activities 2001
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2002/report_activities2001.html>
This yearly report prepared by the IUPAC Executive Director, John Jost,
is a concise overview of what IUPAC has been up to during the last year.
This report was originally prepared for the International Council for
Science, ICSU, but is a valuable reference for everyone who might be
called to give a few words about IUPAC. Previous years reports have been
archived under <http://www.iupac.org/news/archives.html#activities>

* Demographics Report
<http://www.iupac.org/news/archives/2002/01ACSdemo.html>
By the end of 2001, the American Chemical Society managed for IUPAC the
largest subset (about 50%) of Affiliate Members. Their demographics
report presents an interesting snapshot of who our Affiliates are.

* Medicinal Chemistry in the New Millennium.
A glance into the future, by Paul W. Erhardt
Pure Appl. Chem. Vol. 74, No. 5, pp. 703-785 (2002)
The future of medicinal chemistry as both a pure and applied science has
been considered relative to trends that are already having a significant
impact upon drug discovery and development. After quickly reviewing how
medicinal chemistry has been practiced to date, topics considered into
the future include: pursuing therapeutic efficacy, addressing 3D
structure within database settings, assuring absorption, directing
distribution, controlling metabolism, optimizing elimination, and
avoiding toxicity. This article forms part of the special topic coverage
offered by Pure and Applied Chemistry, to highlight topical themes and
to offer critical insight into new and emerging concepts in chemical
sciences.

* Biodiversity
Six plenary lectures presented at the 3rd IUPAC International Conference
on Biodiversity (ICOB-3) in Antalya, Turkey during 3-8 November 2001,
are published in the April 2002 of PAC. They represent the major session
topics discussed at the conference: Chemical Basis of Biodiversity,
Biomolecular Aspects of Biodiversity and Innovative Utilization.
Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 74, No. 4, pp. 511–584, 2002.
Conference Chair and editor Prof. Bilge Sener
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/pac/2002/7404/index.html#1>

In addition, a panel was organized as a discussion forum on
International Cooperation on Molecular Biodiversity. In the resulting
publication, a technical report entitled 'Molecular basis of
biodiversity, conservation, and sustained innovative utilization',
recommendations are presented for international cooperation between
academia and industry on molecular biodiversity.

* SIT (and you should to check this one!)
As part of a project of the Analytical Chemistry Division, version 1.1
of a program using Specific Interaction Theory to calculate ionic
strength corrections for stability constants has been released; it also
includes activity coefficient calculation and molar-molal
interconversion.
To review this program and test the current versio, see
<http://www.iupac.org/projects/2000/2000-003-1-500.html>

* That IChI feeling is spreading, and even Nature got it!
David Adam reported in the journal Nature News section of the May 23rd,
2002 issue how IUPAC is tackling the problem of defining a single
format, a unique name for identifying chemicals. This indeed relates to
IUPAC chemical identifier (IChI) project chaired by Dr. A. McNaught

* In the mail
Active IUPAC members should have received a copy of the IUPAC Handbook
2002-2003.
This edition is now available for sale from the Secretariat (USD 25).

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - 2003 Solicitation
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists has been established to encourage
outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.
The prize will be given for the most outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the
general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word
essay.
Deadline: February 1, 2003 - for entrants who receive their Ph.D. (or
equivalent) degree during the calendar year 2002.
