* 2006 winners of the IUPAC Prizes for Young Chemists
IUPAC announced the winners of the 2006 IUPAC Prizes for Young Chemists, awards for the best Ph.D. theses in the chemical sciences as described in 1000-word essays. The winners are:
* Michelle Nena Chrétien, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
* Valentina Domenici, University of Pisa, Italy
* Matt Law, University of California, Berkeley, USA

* IUPAC Biennial Report 2004-2005
This report lists IUPAC's six long range goals and provides
illustrations of actions taken during the last two years toward meeting
those goals. A copy was mailed as an insert to Chem. Int. May-June 2006.

- - - - - -- RECENT PUBLICATIONS -- - - - - -

* Fundamental Toxicology
Fundamental Toxicology is a concise and comprehensive review of toxicology. It is based on the highly successful Fundamental Toxicology for Chemists and has been enriched and expanded. Every chapter in this new edition has been revised and updated, and four new chapters have been added. With contributions from internationally recognized experts in their field, this broad-based introduction to the topic covers both well-established and rapidly developing areas of toxicology, such as toxicogenomics, reproductive toxicology, behavioral toxicology and ecotoxicology. The book is the outcome of IUPAC project #2001-053-2-700.
J.H. Duffus and H.G.J. Worth (eds), The Royal Society of Chemistry, 2006

* Mutual Solubility of Hydrocarbons with Water and Seawater
Volume 81 in Solubility Data Series covers revisions and updates of out-of-print volumes published in 1988 (vol 37 and 38). The outcomes of this project have been prepared in the standard format of the IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series and published from June 2005 to April 2006, in 12
parts in the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data.

* Plasma Chemistry
This issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry offers an overview on the
recent advances in high- and low-pressure plasmas as well as on more
specific developments in plasma processing science. These topics were
presented at the ISPC 17 by plenary and topical invited speakers.
Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 78, No. 6, pp. 1093-1298, 2006
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/pac/2006/7806/index.html>

* Innovation in Chemistry
"Creativity is the soul of a nation and an inexhaustible source of a
country's prosperity." Original innovation, as the major source of new
technologies, will not only bring about technological breakthroughs, but
give rise to new industries and new economic structures, offering
unlimited opportunities for later starters to overtake the frontrunners.
"Innovation in Chemistry" is the specific theme for the 40th IUPAC
Congress, which was held on 14-19 August 2005 in Beijing, China. The
Congress provided an excellent forum for presenting the latest
innovative achievements in the chemical sciences and in the practice of
chemistry.
Pure Appl. Chem., Vol. 78, No. 5, pp. 889-1091, 2006
<http://www.iupac.org/publications/pac/2006/7805/index.html>

* Novel Aromatic Compounds
The scientific topics of the 11th International Symposium on Novel
Aromatic Compounds (ISNA-11), were selected with an eye toward balancing
the traditional areas of interest with its expansion in new directions.
The 15 articles that appear in this issue of PAC embody these themes,
which include:
- the synthesis of aromatic compounds
- theoretically interesting aromatic molecules
- structural aspects of aromaticity
- aromatic compounds for devices
- fullerenes and nanotubes
- molecular switches and machines
- macrocyclic aromatic compounds

* Macromolecular Symposia
Macromolecular Symposia presents state-of-the-art research articles in
the field of macromolecular chemistry and physics. Contributions are
selected from international meetings, including those of IUPAC. The
following volumes have been published earlier this year:
- Molecular Mobility and Order in Polymers
- Macromolecule-Metal Complexes
- Fillers, Filled Polymers and Polymer Blends
- Polymers for Africa
