"Knowledge sharing
and partnership building are becoming ever more important in the knowledge-based
society of the 21st century. IUPAC, without any doubt or prejudice,
should try to become the global leader in fulfilling this international
duty and responsibility." Jung-Il Jin.

University, College of Sciences, Seoul, Korea, assumed the Presidency
of IUPAC - the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Also
on 1 January, Nicole Moreau became Vice-President and President-elect.
She is Emeritus Professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de
Chimie de Paris (ENSCP), where she was responsible for teaching at the
interface Chemistry-Life Sciences and the leader of the Laboratory of
Biochemistry. John Corish starts as Treasurer; he holds the Chair of
Physical Chemistry at Trinity College, University of Dublin, is a Fellow
of Trinity College, and is currently Head of its School of Chemistry.
Bryan Henry, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Guelph,

* Biophysico-Chemical
Processes of Heavy Metals and Metalloids in Soil
Environments
Written by a multidisciplinary group of soil and environmental scientists,
Biophysico-Chemical Processes of Heavy Metals and Metalloids in Soil
Environments provides the scientific community with a critical qualitative
and quantitative review of the fundamentals of the processes of pollutants
in soil environments. The book covers pollutants' speciation, mobility,
bioavailability and toxicity, and impacts on development of innovative
restoration strategies. In addition, the development of innovative remediation
strategies for polluted soils is covered.

* Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences
The 9th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences (EuAs C2S-9) was held
in Antalya, Turkey, 9-13 September 2006. The choice of Turkey as a venue
was especially appropriate in view of its special location and character
as a bridge between Europe and Asia. Turkey's rich history and diversified
cultural heritage provided an extra dimension to the atmosphere of the
conference. The aim of the Eurasia Conferences is to support the scientific
research of chemists in the Eurasia continent by inviting the participation
of leading scientists from around the world. The Eurasia region has
increased its profile in chemistry, particularly in chemical biology,
over the last 20 years.

* Chemistry for Biology
IUPAC is alert to new developments in all areas in which the role of
chemistry is implicated. In an earlier initiative, the scope of activities
of two of the IUPAC Divisions of basic chemistry (viz. organic and physical
chemistry) was expanded to include the activities directed at understanding
the chemical basis of biological phenomena. Furthermore, an interdivisional
committee on biomolecular chemistry was established. Deliberations within
this committee have resulted in the development of the IUPAC project
2005-042-1-300 on "Chemistry for Biology", <http://www.iupac.org/projects/2005/2005-042-1-300>.
The focus of this project was to organize a Symposium-in-Print that
would illustrate the fundamental role of chemistry in a wide variety
of biological topics.

* IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists - Special PAC topic articles featuring
the 2007 Winners
The IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists encourages young scientists throughout
the world to compete in an annual competition that requires candidates
to submit short essays based upon the topic of their Ph.D. studies.
Starting in 2002, prizewinners have been invited to submit manuscripts
on aspects of their research topics for consideration as short, critical
review articles to be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry. Following
peer review, the most recent series of articles was published in the
January 2008 issue of PAC and includes the following critical reviews:
- Stereochemical effects on intervalence charge transfer
Deanna M. D'Alessandro and F. Richard Keene
- Beyond switches: Rotaxane- and catenane-based synthetic molecular
motors
Euan R. Kay and David A. Leigh
- Quest for the ideal olefin metathesis catalyst
Anna Michrowska and Karol Grela
- Nanoscale surface chemistry in self- and directed-assembly of organic
molecules on solid surfaces and synthesis of nanostructured organic
architectures
