Title: Biological Monitoring of Exposure to Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Coordinator(s): R. Heinrich-Ramm, M.
Jakubowski and B. Heinzow
Completion Date: 2000 - project completed
Objective:
Biological monitoring of exposure to volatile organic solvents is used
for the evaluation of internal exposure. On the basis of dose-effect
and dose-response relationships, the health based recommendations of
the admissible concentrations of unchanged substances or metabolites
can be proposed. Unfortunately in a majority of published papers only
relations between the concentrations in air and biological material
are presented, without the background information on the conditions
of sample collection and sample strategy that have to be based on toxicokinetic
data (t1/2, metabolic parameters). The objective of this study is to
evaluate the existing data on collection of samples, sampling strategy
and the possibility of interpretation of the results. This will result
in a proposal of practical recommendations.
Progress:
The working party presented an improved version at the Geneva GA. It
will be revised and discussed for the last time during a special meeting
in Copenhagen at the end of November 97.
A provisional
document has been prepared and distributed for review. The public
comment period will end 29 fev. 2000.
Project completed - IUPAC Recommendations published
in Pure
Appl. Chem.,
