Glossary of Terms Used in Combinatorial Chemistry
The development of combinatorial techniques has brought about some of the more wide-reaching changes in the chemical sciences over the past two decades, having matured beyond its early applications in drug discovery into fields such as catalyst design and materials science. The breadth of this area of study and the diverse backgrounds of scientists and engineers working in it raise great potential for miscommunication. The Working Party on Nomenclature and Terminology for Combinatorial Chemistry published a glossary of the field as a Technical Report in 1999 (Pure Appl. Chem. 71, 2349-2365 [1999]), and suggestions for more systematic methods for handling chemical library data in 2004 (J. Comb. Chem. 6, 1-11 [2004]). The goal of the project is to revise and update the terminology of the field based on the previous glossary. The project is supported by the Chemistry and Human Heath Division and its Subcommittee on Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Development.
